Light Over Darkness: A Diwali Celebration of Community Spirit
In the heart of Gledhow, nestled among the sugarcane fields, the spirit of Diwali recently came alive in a vibrant celebration organized by We Serve, a local community-driven organization dedicated to service in times of need. This remarkable festival, full of light and joy, showcased the essence of Diwali: the triumph of light over darkness.
Founded by Logan Moodley in 2021, We Serve began during challenging times as the world grappled with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. With many families mourning loved ones and others struggling with job losses, Logan and a few close friends took action, launching a heartfelt initiative to provide meals to disadvantaged members of the community. That first Diwali saw just five pots of food distributed, marking the beginning of a compassionate journey.
What started as a humble gesture has since grown into an impactful movement that has touched lives across and beyond KwaDukuza. Today, We Serve has grown both in its outreach and its impact, touching lives across communities beyond KwaDukuza. Through the generous support of local sponsors, they have addressed vital needs, from water distribution during the Tongaat water crisis to disaster relief after the Tongaat tornado. Remarkably, they also raised funds for a full prosthesis for a young community member and donated wheelchairs to the Dolphin Coast Hospice, showcasing the tangible difference that a compassionate community can make.
On October 30th, 2024, We Serve brought joy to Gledhow’s senior citizens and other community members through a special Diwali celebration. The elderly—our community’s cherished keepers of tradition—enjoyed the festivities, joining in the singing and savoring snacks prepared just for them. It was a touching sight to see our elders revel in the festival, surrounded by the warmth of community. This gathering truly embodied the spirit of Diwali: joy, light, and the togetherness that transcends age.
On Diwali morning, volunteers and our seniors, our cherished pillars of the community, were not just attendees but active participants in the celebrations. They shared their culinary skills and wisdom, coming together to prepare scrumptious meals that were later distributed to those in need. The opportunity to contribute in this way instilled a sense of purpose and pride among the seniors, fostering connections across generations.
As they prepared 20 pots of food, laughter and stories filled the air, transforming the space into a vibrant hub of activity. Their involvement reinforced their important role within the community, reminding everyone of the wealth of knowledge and experience that our elders bring. The meals they prepared not only nourished bodies but also strengthened the bonds within the community.
The festival itself featured moments of joy, with seniors singing and dancing, showcasing their enthusiasm and spirit. Many felt uplifted and appreciated, highlighting the value of their participation and the joy of togetherness.
We Serve’s mission continues to thrive thanks to the generosity of donors and the tireless commitment of volunteers. Their compassion and collaboration serve as a testament to the power of community.
This Diwali, We Serve extends its deepest gratitude to the many businesses and individuals whose support made the festivities possible.
